It is a matter of great pleasure that PS3 Hybrid Firmware 4.85.1 (HFW) has been released and ready for download. As of yesterday, Sony has released Official (OFW) 4.85 for the PlayStation 3 about which we have discussed in PS3 4.85 live update article. Before we talk about PS3 4.85.1 hybrid firmware, let’s focus on a few things. If you haven’t read or you read my previous article, then let me remind you, you no need to update. Now let’s talk about PS3 Hybrid firmware 4.85.1. The 4.85.1 hybrid firmware was released a day after Sony released the 4.85. Hybrid firmware is a modified firmware that can be installed on all consoles. It does not matter which PS3 console model you have FAT, Slim or Super slim. In a way, it is a beta version in which a lot of work is yet to be done. PS3Xploit, Downgrade, patch activity has begun on this firmware. How to install 4.85.1 Hybrid Firmware on PS3 Console?

  1. Extract PS3 hybrid firmware 4.85.1 on your computer desktop or any specific folder.
  2. Plug your branded and a trusted USB drive on your PC.
  3. Format your USB drive with FAT32 (SD card formatter tool is recommended)
  4. Create a root folder on your USB drive PS3>UDPATE
  5. Rename HFW 4.85.1 PS3UPDAT.PUP file to PS3UPDAT.PUP
  6. Copy your hybrid firmware and paste it into UPDATE folder.
  7. Remove your USB drive safely from your PC.
  8. Plug your USB drive on your PS3 second port which is close to Blu-ray drive.
  9. Go to setting tab and select update.
  10. Choose update via storage media.
  11. Follow the screen introduction and you are done.

Should I update?

If you have already updated the firmware of your console then you can override the hybrid firmware.

I’ve already updated my console’s firmware, So what will be the benefit of overwriting the hybrid firmware?

As I have mentioned above there will be nothing to gain from that. But the jailbreak, downgrade, patch, and PS3Xploit activity has begun on this firmware. So if you update now then you can apply jailbreak as soon as PS3Xploit 4.85 is released. There will be no tension to update.

Is there a way to do Downgrade PS3 from 4.85 to 4.84 or 4.82?

If you have been using PS3 from a long time, then you’ll know that till date there is no way you can downgrade your PS3 firmware through USB. There is a hardware modification for downgrade which only supports the selected model and firmware Which currently has no confirmation on 4.85 and it will not work at all on a super slim console. Can I play online PS3 games after overwriting Hybrid firmware 4.85.1?

PS3 online games can also be played on 4.84 firmware with the help of PS3 proxy server. Hybrid firmware which is 4.85.1 and PSN requires the latest firmware to login. So yes you can play online games on PS3 Hybrid Firmware 4.85.1.

Note: This release only brings back the vulnerability from 4.82, Tools, Homebrew, Payloads needs to be updated fully to support 4.85.
